Before You Can Lead Many You Must Lead One
Former New Jets quarterback, Joe Namath said, “To be a leader, you have to make people want to follow you, and nobody wants to follow someone who doesn’t know where he is going.”
Before you can lead others you have to know where you’re going. You have to become the pilot for your life and strive to reach your destination. Too many people today want to be leaders or influencers, but don’t know where they are going. The blind are leading the blind when people without direction come into leadership roles.
It doesn’t have to be that way with you though. You can become a true leader of many by practicing self-leadership. You can practice self-leadership learning who you are, and defining what your goals in life are. Then use who you are and your goals to guide you in life.
Warren Buffet said, “It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it. If you think about that, you’ll do things differently.” Being a good self-leader means practicing self-control, keeping your cool, and behaving appropriately because you can ruin your reputation in 5 minutes by being careless.
Self-leadership translates into personal mastery and mastery of oneself becomes true power.
“Mastering others is strength. Mastering yourself is true power.”
— Lao Tzu
Great leaders aren’t born. They are made by taking control of their own life. People want to follow and listen to the person who has control over his emotions and knows where he is going.
