How To Get The Most Out of What You Read

Increasing your reading comprehension

--

The first three months of the year I went on a reading spree. I’ve read 15 books so far and it’s been amazing, comparing it to last year when I only read two. I wrote another post about the three things I’ve done differently this year compared to last to get my reading up.

Now I want to share how I get the most of the books I read and remember most of what I read. If you’re interested in how you can get more out of the books you read then this post is for you.

Pre-reading

Before I read a chapter in a book, I flip through the chapter and glance over it to see if there are any graphs, pictures, or specialized text, anything that is bold or italicized, that I need to pay attention to.

I do this to become familiar with the book and develop a mental map of what is to come and the graphs and pics serve as landmarks so I know where I am. When I get to the end of the chapter I’ll flip through it from the end to get back to the beginning.

The next phase in my pre-reading is going through the book again and reading the section headers and forming questions about what I want to know based on the title of the chapter and section.
