Think Like a Philosopher

Seek understanding

A philosopher studies how the world works and how we can gain knowledge of those things. They seek understanding. We can engage in philosophical thinking by asking questions about the world we live in, then seeking understanding.

An example of engaging philosophical thinking can be when you consider why you did something, such as why didn’t you go to the gym today? There are multiple answers someone could have for this question. But the goal of answering this question is to understand why you didn’t go to the gym. One answer to the question might be you didn’t have enough time. Then you would ask, what did I do with my time today?

This type of exploration in thought is what philosophical thinking is built on. Philosophical thinking can be thought of as mixing introspection and reasoning. And you can use this type of thinking to help you think through many of the seemingly intractable problems in life — like what to eat for dinner, or why you should get out of bed in the morning.
