Thinking About Transportation Can Make You a Better Writer

There’s always a journey happening when you’re writing

Traveling is a journey. You’re going from point A to B. When going from point A to B, you might make a few stops, depending on your means of travel.

There’s also a journey happening when you write. You’re taking your reader from point A to point B. You can also make stops along the way when you’re writing but your main goal as a writer to get the reader from point A to B.

The way you write tells your reader how you’re traveling. There are multiple means of transportation. You can travel by bus, car, train, subway, airplane, walk, and even travel with a time machine going into the future or looking back at the past.

Your means of travel shapes how you write. Because you’ll see different things when you’re traveling on a bus compared to flying on a plane. When you’re in a car are you driving, or are you the passenger? Each one has a different view and offers a different journey.

Let’s imagine taking your readers on a flight.

You’re the pilot and your reader just purchased a one-way ticket when they clicked your headline. Your introduction should tell them you’re going to get them to their destination, the fastest way possible.
